Parliament’s Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA) has made another attempt to implore former Road Accident Fund (RAF) CEO Collins Letsoalo to appear before it.

After Letsoalo failed to pitch in Parliament on Tuesday to testify in SCOPA’s inquiry into the RAF, the committee contacted his lawyer once again, asking if he would show up on Wednesday.

Chairperson Songezo Zibi said that Parliament wanted to exhaust all avenues to persuade Letsoalo to appear before deciding on any action against him for ignoring a summons to present himself.

After failing to arrive for a 9am meeting on Tuesday, SCOPA decided to give Letsoalo until midday to arrive.

This despite at least two legal letters to the committee explaining why he does not believe it has the jurisdiction to carry out an inquiry of this nature.

SCOPA launched the inquiry two months ago, to probe maladministration at the fund under Letsoalo’ watch, which ended in August.

Zibi said that the committee had once again communicated with his attorney following Tuesday’s no-show.

"The committee will then take a decision after that correspondence from his attorneys comes. What we did ask him to do was to indicate to the committee whether Mr Letsoalo intends to come tomorrow, so that tomorrow, the committee can have a discussion on what its next steps are going to be."

Some MPs on Tuesday called for criminal steps to be taken against Letsoalo for ignoring a parliamentary summons.
