A much-anticipated judgement is set to be handed down in the Highgate massacre inquest in East London on Monday, which could result in prosecution of apartheid era police.
It’s been 32 years since the Highgate Hotel bar was stormed by unknown men, resulting in the death of five people and severe injuries on seven others.
The East London Magistrates Court is expected to hand down judgement in the matter on Monday.
On 1 May 1993, armed intruders entered the Highgate Hotel bar, opening fire on patrons and killing five people.
The assailants have not been charged, despite testimony at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC).
To date, no individuals or organisation have claimed responsibility for the attack and no amnesty applications were submitted to the TRC.
This is despite the families and victims being convinced that apartheid police were behind the attack.
The judgement will determine if the officers will be prosecuted for the crimes.
