Eskom is implementing a strategy to get rid of load reduction by 2027.
The utility recently announced the introduction of the phased power cuts in parts of Joburg, as a result of continued illegal connections, vandalism and bad weather.
Under the banner, Load Reduction Elimination Strategy, the goal is to make load reduction a thing of the past.
This strategy involves strengthening Eskom’s distribution network, addressing high-risk areas, and modernising the grid with smart meters and digital systems.
The plan aims to benefit approximately 1.69 million customers who are currently affected by load reduction, primarily those in Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and KwaZulu-Natal.

Eskom spokesperson Daphne Mokwena said this could be a game-changer for households struggling with electricity costs.
“That programme is run by the municipalities to encourage their customers and just to educate them a bit more in terms of, you know, how to register with their municipalities so that they can participate in this program, because then they get their first free 50 kilowatt hours for free. There's nothing new, we are just reminding the customers that it has been happening. It's not something that had stopped at any juncture, as long as that particular isolated network is overloading, they will implement load reduction to protect the infrastructure and the communities around."
The smart meter rollout is gaining momentum, with the utility having already installed more than 1 million meters.
