Outgoing African National Congress (ANC) Johannesburg chairperson, Dada Morero, has reflected on his three-year tenure as his term officially comes to an end on Thursday.

ANC branches are expected to elect new leaders later today at the party's regional elective conference, currently underway at the Cedar Woods Hotel in Sandton.

Mixed Results
Delivering his reflections at the conference, Morero said that Johannesburg had made significant progress in cleaning up the city during his time as chairperson.

However, he also acknowledged that the municipality has faced severe financial setbacks over the past few years.

Morero stated that revenue collection in the City of Johannesburg has been on a steady decline since 2016.

He added that during this period, the city has also racked up significant unauthorised expenditure and accumulated large debts due to its failure to collect revenue from both residential and commercial customers.

"Our challenges are complex, and they need complex solutions. The 16th regional elective conference must internalise these challenges. You have a responsibility to give us leaders who can handle these challenges and deliver the results."

The Race for Leadership
With his term ending today, Morero says the incoming ANC leadership, which is set to be elected later today, will need to find solutions to the many challenges facing the city.

Later on Thursday afternoon, ANC branches in Johannesburg will begin voting for a new leadership structure. The results are expected to be announced this evening, with Dada Morero facing off against Loyiso Masuku for the top position.

Morero maintains his tenure as Joburg’s ANC chair was marked by success, despite the challenges.
