Delegates at the African National Congress’s (ANC) regional elective conference in Johannesburg are gearing up to cast their votes for a new leadership structure.

The conference is taking place at the Cedar Woods Hotel in Sandton, where Loyiso Masuku and Dada Morero are contesting the position of regional chairperson.

After spending the day in closed-door sessions deliberating key organisational issues, delegates are expected to soon begin preparing for the nomination and voting process.

The moment Dada Morero and Loyiso Masuku have been waiting for is almost here, with the nomination and voting processes expected to begin any time now.

EWN understands it is a tight race between the two, as branch delegates split their support between the ANC heavyweights.

ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula says even though Masuku and Morero belong to opposing factions, the outcome of this leadership contest must ultimately unite the party.

"This conference will consolidate our power in Johannesburg and build on the good work that Dada Morero and his team are leading in Johannesburg."

He says after the internal leadership race, the party must shift its attention to the upcoming local government elections.
