Suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has dismissed the argument that the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) should be allowed to continue operating in the organised crime space.

During his testimony before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry on Thursday, Mchunu defended his decision to issue the instruction to have the PKTT disbanded.

But he also admitted to breaking protocol by not briefing the national commissioner before making the move.

In an attempt to defend his decision to have the PKTT disbanded, Mchunu maintained his view that the task team had run its course in fulfilling its mandate of investigating politically motivated murders.

Mchunu argues against calls for the PKTT to investigate cases in the organised crime space.

"There are arguments out there that it's preferable to keep the PKT because of its unique focus and ability to combat organised crime. That's a wrong argument."

"The PKTT was not designed to combat organised crime, they were established and designed to combat political killings," he said.

Despite defending his decision of disbandment, the commissioners believe he did not have the authority to disband it.
