Limpopo Provincial Police Commissioner Thembi Radebe has expressed her profound disappointment after an alleged domestic violence incident resulted in the tragic deaths of two police officers, occurring during the ongoing 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children.
The incident unfolded on Sunday night. It is alleged that a Sergeant, stationed at the Mopani District Office, approached a 31-year-old Constable who worked at the Ritavi Police Station. An argument reportedly ensued.
The Sergeant subsequently shot the young woman before turning the gun on himself.
Commissioner Radebe says this incident is a harsh reminder of the impact of gender-based violence, even within the ranks of law enforcement.
Police spokesperson, Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba, stated that the tragedy further emphasises the urgent need to address this "scourge."
Mashaba urged officers to seek assistance for personal difficulties:
"We urgently appeal to all members experiencing relationship difficulties, emotional distress or domestic conflict to seek professional help without delay. The Provincial Commissioner, therefore, encouraged members to make use of the employee health and wellness programs that SAPS has on offer, rather than resorting to violence."
