The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is investigating the death of a 57-year-old woman who was found dead in police holding cells at the Rosedale Police Station in Upington.
The woman was picked up by police after 4am last week Wednesday after someone called to report a person lying on the sidewalk of Bakenskop Street, Rosedale.
IPID said the two officers who attended to the complaint found the unresponsive woman and took her to the police station and put her in a holding cell.
Hours later, they noticed that the woman was still unresponsive and called paramedics, who declared the woman dead.
IPID spokesperson Lizzy Shuping said a postmortem will to be conducted in the coming days.
"IPID was notified just after 7am, and the deceased was identified as a 57-year-old coloured female during the processing of the scene by IPID. She allegedly had external injuries to her body."
