The South African government has reiterated its firm stance that it will not allow the country to be used in what it describes as an agenda to depopulate Gaza.

Speaking at a media briefing in Pretoria on Wednesday, Minister in the Presidency Khumudzo Ntshavheni stated unequivocally that South Africa will not be used as a pawn in this geopolitical situation.

Thousands of Palestinians have reportedly fled Gaza recently, fearing for their lives amid the escalating conflict between Israel and Hamas.

Last month, South Africa granted 90-day visa exemptions to 153 Palestinians who arrived at OR Tambo International Airport without proper documentation.

The government has since cancelled these visas, stating its resolve not to be involved in aiding the depopulation of Gaza.

Minister Ntshavheni emphasised the government's position, citing concerns over the circumstances of the arrivals:

"Any attempt to depopulate Gaza and any portion of the Palestinian territories will not be supported by South Africa. There was an abuse of the system because the people who are coming here are not coming of their own will, and their ability to return to Gaza is very much in question.”
