Tshililo Mafuka, Director of Bob and Maggie Agriculture in Musina, Limpopo has been named Tiger Brands’ first Emerging Farmer of the Year.

The award recognises his contribution to the production of tomatoes, which are used in popular Tiger Brands products, including All Gold tomato sauce.

Mafuka started his venture on a small scale, planting his own seedlings and facing years of challenges.

"It was challenging for almost five years until Tiger Brands came to my rescue three years ago, that's when I started farming a little bit, sort of commercially. Then I was planting something like one hectare, which I've grown so far to be able to plant something like eight hectares as I speak."

"The most challenging thing is water supply. We do have less rain on that side. Water is very scarce. Another thing is agricultural needs - machinery, equipment and all that. Small-scale farmers are not yet able to afford those things."
