The South African Weather Service (SAWS) forecasts a 60% chance of showers and thundershowers in the central and eastern parts of the country on Wednesday and Thursday.

Forecaster Lehlohonolo Thobela says a yellow-level 2 warning has been issued for the North West, Mpumalanga, Gauteng, northern parts of the Eastern Cape, Free State, and southern Limpopo.

“We are expecting a high likelihood of minor impact of heavy downpour, which may lead to localised flooding, damaging wind, as well as a possibility of hail and damaging winds.”

Orange-level 5 warnings have been issued for eastern parts of the country, with 80% of showers expected in KwaZulu-Natal, with a medium likelihood of significant impact from severe thunderstorms.

“It is the summer of being wet and cool during the day, with some extensive rain. Where there is no rain, we can expect some warm nights,” Thobela says.
