Indulging in alcohol and rich food is part of festive season fun for many, but then the consequences have to be dealt with in the new year.

Strength conditioning and fitness coach, Kaylyn Elliott, says the obvious first step to getting rid of that holiday belly is to cut back on how much beer you're drinking, as it's very high in calories.

It's also important to balance your alcohol intake with the right types of food.

"If you're going to have a beer at a braai... don't add your potato salad to the plate, because the amount of carbs that are in just one beer alone – there's your carbs for the evening."

As for exercise, Elliott insists on combining your usual cardio and High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) with strength training.

"Minimum of three times a week to build your muscle, which will then boost your metabolism."
