London has recorded its lowest murder rate in over a decade, with 97 killings reported last year.

International correspondent Adam Gilchrist explains that this represents a 36% drop over the past five to six years and is part of a broader decline across the UK, where homicide rates have fallen 27% over the same period.

He said that while street crime and robberies still occur, overall violent crime has decreased significantly.

"The homicide rate per capita in London is now 1.1 per 100,000. As a way of definition, in Paris, it's 1.6. In New York, it's 2.8. In Johannesburg, it's 44. In Cape Town 68, we're not going anywhere near Mexico, Brazil, and Ecuador."

Police and local authorities attribute the drop to targeted interventions against gangs and organised crime.

The city has implemented focused policing operations and community campaigns aimed at steering young people away from gang involvement, providing alternative opportunities and education.

"You have to be a bit careful with this because these stats are volatile, but nonetheless, at this stage, it's a success story."
