After an initial alert level 9 warning, the South African Weather Service has now ramped up that warning by now issuing a red level 10 warning for disruptive rainfall in parts of Limpopo and Mpumalanga.

The weather service said it expects the heavy rainfall to persist in the coming days and has warned residents that it poses a severe risk to livelihoods and infrastructure.

Forecaster Lehlohonolo Thobela said "as a result, the South African Weather Service (saws) has issued a red level 10 warning for disruptive rainfall for areas most at risk. Potential impacts include:

• Danger to life due to fast-flowing rivers and streams

• Flooding of roads, bridges, and low-lying crossings

• Widespread damage to settlements, property, and critical infrastructure

• Displacement of communities and disruption to essential services”
