The pair was captured more than two weeks ago during a US military invasion in the capital of Venezuela, Caracas.

While the White House initially claimed the arrests were linked to drug-related offences, it later acknowledged an interest in taking control of Venezuela’s vast oil reserves.

Speaking at a media briefing in Johannesburg on Monday, NUMSA general secretary Irvin Jim described US President Donald Trump as a threat to international peace.

“We think that he is the Adolf Hitler of today. That is why we are calling on the people of the United States to do a favour to humanity and the people of the world by voting Donald Trump out of power.”
