Inmates in South Africa's prisons have recorded a 94.4% matric pass rate, with many excelling in Accounting and technical subjects.
Correctionnal Services Minister Pieter Groenewald brought this to light at an awards ceremony held at Goodwood Correctional Facility on Monday.
He said 15 out of the 19 correctional schools had a 100% pass rate.
Groenewald added that more candidates are opting out of Mathematics and choosing Mathematical Literacy, a trend he's described as concerning.
"We must confront a concerning trend within our correctional schools where more inmates are opting for Mathematical Literacy. This has to be corrected. We must strive always for a higher level and not just continue on a certain level."
Groenewald also endorsed the integrity of examinations that his department conducted, adding that no irregularities occurred.
"So, Correctional Services is one of the departments who with pride can say that we contributed to a safe and credible examination writing for our people. Education in a correctional environment requires deeper reflection and collaboration, and we stand ready to make a meaningful contribution."
