20 January 2026 | 7:11Huawei has narrowly reclaimed the top spot in China’s smartphone market, edging out Apple in a tightly contested year as foldables and local brands reshape buying habits.

Huawei has returned to the top of China’s smartphone market, overtaking Apple by a slim margin in one of the world’s most competitive tech arenas.
A tight race at the top
China’s smartphone market remains one of the most important globally, with about 282 million units sold last year, slightly down on the year before. Despite the marginal decline, competition at the top has intensified, with leadership capable of shifting week by week.
For the full year, Huawei captured around 17% of the market, selling roughly 46.8 million devices. Apple followed closely with about 45.9 million units, while Xiaomi and Oppo were not far behind, underscoring how narrow the gaps have become among the leading brands.
Signs of a Huawei resurgence
The figures point to a broader comeback for Huawei, which has steadily rebuilt momentum in its home market after years of pressure following US trade restrictions. Observers say the latest numbers suggest the company is once again operating at near full strength in China.
Foldables drive innovation
Beyond overall sales, innovation in premium devices is shaping consumer interest. Honor, which split from Huawei before the US ban, has emerged as a leader in foldable smartphones. Its Magic V series has pushed the limits of thinness, with recent models rivalling — and in some cases beating — competitors on design and usability.
Tech analysts note that modern foldables are increasingly practical as everyday phones, while also offering tablet-like functionality when unfolded, making them attractive to power users.
As competition tightens and new form factors gain traction, China’s smartphone market looks set for further shifts — with leadership likely to remain fluid in the months ahead.
