Western Cape Premier Alan Winde is meeting with his provincial leadership omn Wednesday, to address a deepening water crisis in Knysna and recent wildfires across the Cape Winelands and Overberg districts.
The provincial leadership is receiving updates on wildfire response efforts, as fire crews have been kept busy battling blazes in the Cape Winelands and Overberg region.
The fires have burned tens of thousands of hectares, threatened farms, homes, and infrastructure.
In Knysna, critically low dam levels have placed severe strain on water supply, prompting the Western Cape government to seek a provincial disaster classification.
The move is aimed at unlocking additional resources and strengthening emergency interventions to support residents and businesses.
Kynsna's primary dam, the Akkerkloof Dam, is currently at 18% full, translating to an estimated 15 days of usable water at present consumption levels.
Said Winde: "This town is growing very fast more and more people are moving here and therefore you've got to make sure there's a long-term investment plan into sustainable water supply."
Residents and businesses are urged to adhere to water restrictions and fire safety measures as emergency teams remain on high alert.
