The Stormers will look to maintain their flawless start to the United Rugby Championship when they host arch-rivals the Sharks in a sold-out coastal derby at DHL Cape Town Stadium on Saturday night.
Sitting top of the URC log with nine wins from nine matches, the Stormers reach the halfway mark of the season brimming with confidence. Their campaign has been built on consistency, adaptability and an improved return on tour, a key difference from previous seasons.
Away wins set the platform
Utility back Damian Willemse says crucial away victories laid the foundation for the team’s strong position.
“We picked up 15 points on the road in Italy and Wales, which really set us up,” Willemse said. “In previous seasons, we struggled away and had to chase points at home. This year, we did the hard work early.”
That platform has allowed the Stormers to blend forward dominance with attacking freedom out wide, a hallmark of Cape rugby. Willemse credits the balance between pack and backline, with the forwards consistently providing front-foot ball.
“The forwards have been phenomenal. They give us the base to play. As backs, we pride ourselves on taking opportunities when that platform is there.”
Depth, leadership and a packed Cape Town Stadium
Depth has also been a major strength, with fringe players stepping up alongside established Springbok stars. Willemse says the squad’s collective buy-in has lifted standards across the board.
“Everyone bought into the plan at the start of the season. The growth of some of the younger and fringe players over the past two years has been incredible.”
With more than 45,000 tickets sold and a near-capacity crowd expected, Willemse believes the atmosphere will match the occasion.
“Our fans are unbelievable. People are coming out with their families, spending money to support us. We just want to repay that by putting on a performance that makes Cape Town smile.”
Kick-off is at 7.25 pm, with the Stormers aiming to keep their perfect record intact against a Sharks side desperate to derail their momentum.
Did you know?
The Stormers have the best home club rugby stadium attendance in the world.
Based on recent statistics from the United Rugby Championship (URC), the Stormers consistently draw the largest crowds
While top French Top 14 teams like Bordeaux-Bègles and Toulouse also command very high, consistent, and sell-out crowds (often in the 20k–30k range), the Stormers' ability to draw 40k+ to their 55,000-capacity home ground places them at the top.
