One survivor who was caught in the Mozambican floods with missing Ekurhuleni Roads and Transport MMC Andile Mgwevu is on his way back to South Africa.
Mgwevu has been missing for over a week after the car he was travelling in was swept away by floodwaters in Chokwé. It is believed that Mgwevu was travelling with four other people in the vehicle, with only one person so far having been found.
Speaking at a media briefing on Friday, Ekurhuleni Mayor Doctor Xhakaza said the survivor’s identity will not be disclosed at this stage.
“An emergency travel certificate has been facilitated and handed over to enable him to travel back to South Africa. The authorities in Mozambique have indicated that search and rescue operations are still underway. Furthermore, the mission has established the names of the other victims who were with the MMC, and they are all from the Springs area in KwaThema. We will allow Jayco to release the names once their next of kin have been notified.”
