The Federation of Unions of South Africa (FEDUSA) welcomed a commercial deal on Wednesday that will see carmaker Nissan sell its Rosslyn manufacturing plant to Chinese-owned Chery.

Chery recently confirmed it would purchase the land, buildings, and associated assets of the Nissan facilities in mid-2026.

The deal, which includes the nearby stamping plant, is subject to regulatory approval.

It signals the end of Nissan’s 60-year vehicle manufacturing presence in the country.

FEDUSA deputy general secretary Ashley Benjamin said the automotive industry was a significant contributor to South Africa’s gross domestic product (GDP).

“The automotive industry contributes significantly to South Africa’s GDP, boosts exports, and attracts foreign investment. Chery’s investment will create job opportunities both directly and indirectly, which will greatly assist in addressing South Africa’s unemployment crisis,” Benjamin said.

He added that the federation echoed the sentiments of the Motor Industry Staff Association (MISA) regarding the importance of such investments.

“Fedusa echoes Misa’s sentiments that such investments are critical in absorbing workers affected by the closure of non-performing dealerships of traditional brands and in ensuring employment sustainability within the retail motor sector."
