The multi-party coalition governing the City of Johannesburg is continuing talks on the growing calls for Dada Morero to step down as Mayor.

Morero is expected to face a motion of no confidence on Thursday afternoon, tabled by the Al Jama-ah party. Although Al Jama-ah is part of the ANC-led coalition, the party maintains that Morero is not the right candidate to lead the city.

The ANC in Johannesburg is split, with one faction wanting Dada Morero to resign and another calling for him to remain as Mayor. However, the party’s Secretary-General, Fikile Mbalula, says removing Morero would destabilise the ANC ahead of the local government elections.

The coalition is expected to decide whether the motion of no confidence will proceed. ActionSA Caucus Leader Marcel Coutriers says the ANC should fix its internal division outside the Council.

"There is no clear or credible alternative plan for better government being presented and, as such, this motion risks becoming yet another round of musical chairs in the mayoralty, with no tangible benefit for residents."

Morero survived two motions of no confidence last year. The current discussions will determine if he continues to lead the city's executive.
