Post-workout recovery isn’t just for muscles. Skin experts warn that gym sessions can stress the skin barrier, making cleansing, hydration and targeted oils key to healthy, resilient skin.

Fitness routines often focus on muscle recovery, but skin experts say the body’s largest organ also takes strain during and after exercise.

“After gym sessions, your skin barrier is temporarily stressed,” says wellness expert Liezel van der Westhuizen. “Gyms are high-contact environments with shared equipment and towels, and your skin is constantly defending itself.”

She said post-exercise inflammation is common, making proper cleansing, hydration and nourishment essential, particularly for people who train frequently.

Why men should also pay attention

Van der Westhuizen said men tend to under-moisturise, especially after shaving.

“Men often forget that recovery applies to the skin too,” she said. “Firming oils can support hydration, reduce tightness and dryness, and help restore comfort after shaving or intense training.”

What to look for in a product

She advised consumers to choose products with ingredients they can recognise and understand, rather than long, complex chemical lists.

“Look for ingredients you can actually name,” she said. “That way you know what you’re putting on your skin.”

She recommends products such as Contoura Firming Facial Oil, which contains plant-based oils such as pomegranate, argan, rosehip and grape seed, along with vitamin E and essential oils like frankincense and geranium. According to the brand, the formulation aims to support firmness, elasticity and overall skin comfort.

Patch tests and precautions

Experts caution that essential oils can trigger reactions in some people.

“Always do a patch test on your inner arm or behind your ear for 24 to 48 hours,” Van der Westhuizen said. “If you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, or using prescription drugs, check with a doctor or dermatologist first.”

She added that firming oils should complement, not replace, basic skincare steps.

“It doesn’t replace sunblock,” she stressed. “You still need proper cleansing and daily sun protection. Think of it as a support player in your routine.”
