Senona concludes lengthy testimony on Hawks Port Shepstone storage facility

KwaZulu-Natal Hawks boss Lesetja Senona concluded his testimony before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry after testifying at length on the Hawks’s Port Shepstone storage facility.

The facility was broken-into on several occasions.

However, in spite of this, during testimony on Thursday, it emerged that the facility has no alarm system or CCTV cameras on site.

In November 2021, 541 kilograms of cocaine worth R200 million mysteriously vanished from the Hawks’s offices.

At the time, the Hawks labelled the incident as a case of break-in and theft.

But to date, no one has been arrested.

Testifying at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, Senona said someone sold them out, but it wasn't him.

Evidence leader Adila Hassim read out a document that highlighted the shortfalls in terms of security at the Port Shepstone facility.

“One, no CCTV cameras are installed in and around the premises. Two, there’s no early warning alarm system in the office space, more especially in offices located on the ground floor. Three, no beam sensors located exterior next to the office location.”

Senona said he was not appointed as head of the Hawks in the province when the cocaine was stolen but was heading the unit when at least three other break-ins occurred.
