While Johannesburg Water insists water supply across Midrand is showing improvement, some residents are still without supply, and others said they have only seen trickles or low-pressure droplets from their taps.

On Thursday, some areas in Midrand will officially mark day 8 of battling dry taps.

Officials had hoped that water levels across the system would reach at least 40% by on Wednesday, but by late afternoon, Joburg Water only announced that reservoir outlets were being reopened gradually to support system recovery, and reduce the risk of pipe bursts from airlocks.

The utility assured that low-lying areas have access to water, with high-lying areas to be restored progressively as levels stabilise.

Meanwhile, in areas that remain dry, the water shortage is hitting residents hard in their pockets.

“I am spending about R400 a week on fast food. What can I do? We can’t cook.”

While one or two tankers have been spotted in the area, residents have also complained that the water quality from the tankers is not safe for consumption.
