The presence of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents at the Winter Olympics in Milan has sparked controversy and protest.
World news correspondent Adam Gilchrist explained that anti-ICE protests took place in Italy when the US announced that agents would be deployed to assist American security operations at the games.
The agency has been involved in the fatal shootings of two Americans in the US during an immigration crackdown ordered by President Donald Trump.
While the Italian government has confirmed that the ICE agents will have no operational police role, Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala said the agency would not be welcome in his city.
“The mayor of Milan has already expressed great unhappiness with the presence of those ICE agents. He called them ‘a militia that kills’,” Gilchrist said.
