Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero has defended his service delivery track record as the city’s water crisis continues to deepen.
Morero has rejected claims that Joburg’s water woes have reached disaster levels that require a state of emergency classification. Furthermore, Morero has accused opposition political parties of exploiting the crisis for political gain.
Mayor Dada Morero’s utterances come as the city faces growing criticism for failing to adequately address Joburg’s collapsing water infrastructure.
Despite acknowledging shortcomings, Morero insists he has confronted the challenges head-on, pointing to the recent water outage in Midrand. He says he was on the ground helping to find solutions and that the hands-on approach demonstrates his fitness to hold office.
"I’m still fit to hold the job," Morero said. "Over and above the water business, there are a number of other service delivery [tasks], in terms of infrastructure development, which we continue to do."
Political pressure continues to intensify for Morero ahead of the local government elections as access to water remains a focal point during campaigning.
