As the local government elections for a new mayor of Johannesburg loom, Democratic Alliance candidate Helen Zille has been front and centre amid the city’s ongoing water crisis.

Residents took to the streets to protest prolonged water outages and a lack of intervention from the municipality and Johannesburg Water.

City officials faced backlash after Mayor Dada Morero told residents to “use water sparingly”, despite not having any.

While Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi added that he was also impacted by water outages, but goes to a hotel to shower.

Zille blasted officials, adding that households are scolded for “over-consumption” while Johannesburg Water does not maintain the infrastructure.

In a viral video posted to social media, she sits in a water-filled pothole in Linbro Park where a burst pipe has been left with clean water running for a week.

Zille highlighted the city’s crumbling infrastructure and need for change.

“We are losing millions of litres of water to waste due to leaks and bad infrastructure,” she said.
