As pressure mounts over collapsing services in the Emfuleni Local Municipality, the Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng says it is ready to step in.

The party has announced Kingsol Chabalala as its mayoral candidate for the upcoming local government elections, expected between November and January.

Nearly 500 registered political parties are likely to contest the polls.

Emfuleni, currently governed by the African National Congress (ANC), has been plagued by financial instability and service delivery failures. Residents have endured sewage spills, crumbling infrastructure, unreliable refuse removal, and mounting municipal debt to Eskom and Rand Water—triggering frequent protests.

The DA says its focus is on rescuing the municipality from what it calls years of mismanagement. It argues that Chabalala represents a fresh start and a commitment to clean, accountable governance.
