The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has pulled out of the African National Congress (ANC)-led governing coalition in Ekurhuleni.

The decision comes after Tuesday night’s MMC reshuffle by Mayor Doctor Xhakaza.

Xhakaza removed two EFF members from his mayoral committee, leaving only two.

When the EFF and ANC entered into a coalition in 2023, both parties held five MMC positions each.

The EFF in Gauteng said the ANC has been slowly pushing it out of the governance structure.

“This confirms that the systematic removal of the EFF from government in the City of Ekurhuleni is not based on performance failures, but precisely on our effective performance, which the ANC perceives as a political threat,” said EFF Gauteng spokesperson Dumisani Baleni.

“The EFF, therefore, informs the people of Ekurhuleni and Gauteng that we have declined the offer to continue forming part of the mayoral committee in the City of Ekurhuleni. We will instead take up our role in the opposition benches with discipline and determination, continuing to hold the executive accountable.”
