Jozi music lovers are in for a treat with the opening of An Ode to Motown at the Mandela Theatre at Joburg Theatre.

The musical showcases the range of talent represented by the legendary US record label, founded in 1959 by Berry Gordy.

The production is a timely one, celebrating black excellence during Black History Month.

"We are traveling back in time to salute the iconic Berry Gordy and how the Motown label became a portal of possibilities."

The show features top South African talent including Lerato Mvelase, Tamara Dey, Liesl Penniken, Hlengiwe Pearl and Anele Precious Mthethwa.

Gugs Mhlungu chats to musical director Margaret Motsage, a respected singer in her own right.

She talks about how the story of Motown resonates with the story of South Africa and its people.

"Sundays after church, having that beautiful 'seven colours' meal, you just listened to all those soul-inspired songs... It's something that's truly ingrained in us - it offered so much raw talent, it resonated with everyone and still does."

Motsage said that the passion and fire for Motown that emanates from director James Ngcobo is evident in the show.

"He's one of our most brilliant directors... When we first spoke about it in October last year he already knew what he wanted, so it was really easy working with someone who's so driven, knowing what it is he wants to put across - the story of Motown and how it resonates with the South African story."

An Ode to Motown is on at Joburg Theatre's Mandela Theatre until 1 March.

Book your spot while tickets are still available at Webtickets.
