Build One South Africa (BOSA) leader Mmusi Maimane is calling on Parliament to convene an urgent debate of national importance regarding the escalating crisis in the Middle East.

Maimane believes the debate is necessary to determine the gravity of the situation and its immediate implications for South Africa.

He argues that an urgent parliamentary session would provide an essential platform for members to scrutinise government action, debate policy responses, and make recommendations to protect citizens and the economy, while also asserting the country’s position on the global stage.

The request follows recent military escalations where the US and Israel launched attacks on Iran. This has prompted retaliation against US sites in the Gulf region, leaving thousands of travellers stranded and expatriates desperate for evacuation.

In a formal letter to Speaker Thoko Didiza, Maimane outlined three interrelated considerations justifying the urgency of the debate.

The primary concern is the safety of South African citizens currently stranded in a volatile environment.

Maimane emphasised that it is the government’s responsibility and Parliament’s oversight duty to ensure all necessary measures are taken to secure the safety of citizens abroad and facilitate their return.

Maimane warned that Parliament must address the potential for severe disruptions in global energy markets and international trade.

“Rising oil and gas prices will place upward pressure on transport, manufacturing, and electricity generation costs upward, exacerbating the cost of living and straining government resources,” Maimane stated.

He believes Parliament plays a critical role in guiding government actions to mitigate these looming economic risks.

Lastly, Maimane asserted that South Africa must be decisive in its foreign policy.

He called for the country to clearly articulate its position regarding violations of national sovereignty and the use of military force in the region.
