An outstanding DNA report has delayed an investigation into the so-called Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) 11.
Eleven Western Cape (AGU) members made on Thursday a brief appearance in the Athlone Magistrates Court for the alleged murder of Manenberg resident Wade Price.
Price died in police custody in December, allegedly after he was suffocated during interrogation about a fatal shooting outside the same court a week before his death.
Police alleged price complained of an ear ache and collapsed, however an Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) investigation later determined he died of unnatural causes.
The eleven officers are charged with murder, kidnapping, assault, torture and defeating the ends of justice.
The courtroom was filled with supporters for the victim and the AGU officers.
Prosecutors told the court the completion of the murder investigation hinges on a DNA report that is still outstanding.
The lawyer for the 11 accused, Bruce Hendricks, said he's not too concerned about this delay.
"It's all systematic delays. I'm not really concerned... As the magistrate pointed out...We are shocked that the post-mortem report was obtained so quickly."
The matter has been postponed to 12 June 2026 for further investigation.
