The Tshwane municipal council is meeting to deliberate on corruption allegations against the metro's chief financial officer (CFO) Gareth Mnisi.
The allegations range from Mnisi’s unexplained wealth, his undeclared interests and misrepresentations in his CV.
Thursday’s council meeting will not be open to the public. Trouble for Mnisi came when he went through a divorce in 2024.
Court papers from his divorce show the 36-year-old has been living a life of luxury, which some political parties said is far beyond his salary and declared assets.
This includes international first class travelling, 10 properties and a fleet of supercars worth about R6 million.
The Republican Conference of Tshwane, a political party in the metro, said Mnisi has also misrepresented his CV to the municipality, including that he once worked for the National Treasury.
The African National Congress (ANC) in the region recently called for an investigation into what it called Mnisi’s “unexplained wealth”.
Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance (DA)’s caucus leader, Cilliers Brink, has questioned why all of this is coming up now.
“Every Section 56 manager and every manager that reports directly to the city manager goes through a vetting process as part of the vetting process and if there are allegations against the CFO, the city manager must share with council what the results of that investigation was and we must determine if there is some kind of lifestyle issue to account for, but I am concerned.
"Beyond the questions that the CFO must legitimately answer, the sudden urge to get rid of the CFO goes along with an election cycle where the ANC wants to get maximum benefit from government, tenders. Although I don’t have evidence to corroborate this, I am concerned there is now pressure being placed on the CFO.”
These allegations and more will be deliberated during Thursday’s closed-door council meeting.
