The Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA) is urging police to intensify investigations into an alleged arson attack at the Nyanga taxi rank.

Five minibus taxis and four sprinter buses were damaged in a fire at the rank in the early hours of Friday.

Firefighting crews responded to reports of several vehicles alight shortly after the blaze broke out.

The cause of the fire is still unclear and authorities have not yet confirmed whether it was deliberately set.

This is the second such incident at the Nyanga taxi rank in just over a year.

In February last year, sixteen taxis were destroyed in a similar blaze, but no arrests have been made in connection with that incident.

CATA secretary Nkululeko Sityebi said it’s heartbreaking that taxi owners continue to suffer major financial losses without anyone being held accountable.

“So we’re appealing to the police service to make sure that this thing is being prevented, or the perpetrators are brought to book, so that we can move forward in life.”

Despite the damage, taxi operations at the rank have not been affected.
