Western Cape Mobility MEC Isaac Sileku says police must act decisively if allegations of criminality against a member of a taxi association linked to Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA) are proven true.

A member of CATA's Nyanga/Seawater association has been accused by fellow members of being behind recent killings of CATA leaders, including women and taxi drivers.

The individual is also alleged to have extorted around 13 million rand from association members since 2020.

Sileku said the allegations are deeply concerning, especially claims that someone is extorting people who are simply trying to support their families.

Sileku adds that the government will also consider possible interventions.

"I'm glad that someone is actually speaking up now, and I'm hopeful that SAPS is going to do their job and make sure that if those allegations are found to be true, then the law must take its course so that we as Mobility can also play our part."

He stressed that taxi ranks must never become places where innocent people, including women, are killed.
