Madlanga Commission commits to wrapping up proceedings in August

The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry has committed to meeting the new deadline that has been set for it.

On Monday, President Cyril Ramaphosa extended the commission’s period by five months.

It was initially set to conclude its work by 17 March 2026; however, the new deadline now requires it to submit its final report by 31 August 2026.

So far, the commission has seen 50 witnesses, and there have been delays due to some falling ill at the last minute, among other administrative challenges.

Speaking to the media at the Bridgette Mabandla Justice College in Pretoria on Tuesday, the commission's spokesperson, Jeremy Michaels, said the extension is welcomed.

“When we started this year, we were pretty clear about what we needed to do, what we needed to get through, how much time was going to be required and, of course, now we have our final deadline, 31 August [2026], so we will be working backwards to ensure that we meet that deadline.”
