A church ceremony will take place later in the day at the Rose of Lima Catholic Church, where his family will continue paying their respects.

Lekota passed away at a hospital in Johannesburg last week after battling a prolonged illness.

The family of the late struggle stalwart said no amount of time could ever heal the pain caused by his passing.

They said what hurt even more was that for many years Lekota was not physically present as he was detained for a long period on Robben Island.

As the family continues reflecting on his life and legacy, a church service will be held this afternoon as preparations continue for his final farewell.

His remains will be collected from the Twilight funeral parlour and transported to the Rose of Lima Catholic Church for the family prayer service.
