Forum for South Africa (FOSA) has cautioned that rapidly rising electricity charges are placing an unbearable strain on ordinary South Africans, especially the poor and working class.

The organisation said tariffs are increasing far above inflation, making electricity increasingly unaffordable.

FOSA warned that high costs could drive more communities toward illegal electricity connections, often exploited by criminal syndicates.

National leader Tebogo Mashilompane called on government to urgently soothe electricity pricing, explore alternative energy solutions and act against crime linked to illegal connections.

“If the government continues to operate in the current manner without decisive intervention, South Africa will face an endless cycle of rising costs, growing crime, increasing unemployment and deepening poverty. FOSA once again warns government about the dangers of illegal electricity connections. We have seen this problem before, and without urgent action, it will escalate again.”
