The African National Congress (ANC) has stated that in honoring the memory of late anti-apartheid activist Mosiuoa Lekota, South Africa must ensure that his contribution to the liberation struggle is never forgotten.
The Congress of the People (COPE) leader and co-founder was laid to rest yesterday following his death last week after a prolonged illness.
Lekota was among many political prisoners on Robben Island who sacrificed their lives to fight racial segregation and oppression in pre-democratic South Africa.
Speaking at the funeral service in Bloemfontein on Saturday, ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula emphasised that Lekota’s legacy must be honoured.
"Your journey among us has come to its early end, but your contribution to the freedom of this nation will remain written in the history of our people. May your spirit rest in eternal peace and may the flame of your memory continue to guard the path of freedom," Mbalula said.
