Future of Tafelberg site under scrutiny as Heritage Western Cape weighs in

Heritage Western Cape has raised concerns about the future of the long-contested Tafelberg site.

The property is back in the spotlight after the Western Cape Department of Infrastructure recently met with residents and Heritage Western Cape to present a heritage impact assessment related to the site.

Plans for the site to be divided into three parcels and rezoned for a mixed-use development, including a social housing component, are currently underway.

The Tafelberg site in Sea Point is set to be revamped to include an eight-storey residential building with retail space alongside two four-storey social housing blocks built around a shared courtyard.

However, Heritage Western Cape (HWC) and the Sea Point Residents’ Association said the old Tafelberg school building, earmarked for social development, was not properly considered in the assessment.

HWC said the property is a provincial heritage site that includes a historic school building, Wynyard Mansions and mature tree avenues.

The heritage authority said a final decision will only be made once further planning and consultation processes are completed.

The Western Cape Department of Infrastructure has indicated it will respond to the HWC in due time.
