A grade one teacher at Thembalethu Primary School in the Western Cape was suspended for recording and posting a video of a child who did not participate in a class fundraiser.
For the school’s ‘Pie Day’ fundraiser, learners were asked to contribute R40, and children who participated received a pie and a juice.
In the video, the teacher can be heard mocking a boy who was not able to participate in the fundraiser.
The learner is seen covering their face while sitting among classmates who are enjoying their pie.
Western Cape Education Department spokesperson Bronagh Hammond confirmed the teacher’s suspension pending an investigation.
Educational psychologist Dr Ken Rensnick said the teacher’s behaviour was 'inappropriate', singling the child out in front of his peers, and the potential long-term effects on the child’s self-esteem.
“They may not necessarily be scared for life, because the child might be well socialised, but the teacher’s behaviour was bizarre when you think that she is supposed to be the authority figure in that classroom. Children need to feel respected and feel safe.”
He emphasised the importance of handling situations like these with care, especially when dealing with children from disadvantaged backgrounds.
“In a situation where you do have kids who may not be as affluent as the rest, it needs to be handled with careful consideration, such as contacting parents, making them understand what the day is about… but you don’t go out humiliating a child.”
Resnick highlighted the critical role of open communication between parents and children to encourage children to share their experiences.
