The African Transformation Movement (ATM) is calling on government to urgently investigate reports of a Nigerian king's coronation in the Eastern Cape.
Social media has been abuzz with users reacting to a video that has gone viral, showing celebrations welcoming the so-called king, "Igwe Ndigbo na East London," to the province.
The ATM has described the unverified coronation as a blatant disregard for the country's legal framework and an insult to South Africa's institution of traditional leaders.
The party is also calling for the immigration status of all those involved to be investigated.
The Premier of the Eastern Cape, Oscar Mabuyane, must immediately institute a full provincial investigation into this matter. The Minister of Home Affairs, Dr Leon Schreiber, must urgently investigate the immigration status and activities of those involved, and determine whether any laws have been violated, including possible misrepresentation or abuse of cultural status," said ATM national spokesperson Zama Ntshona.
