Residents in flooded parts of Limpopo said that they fear for their lives as heavy rains continue across the province.

Some communities have been left without water or electricity since the January floods, with rivers still overflowing and bridges washed away.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned that the inclement weather could last until the end of March, keeping communities on high alert.

Residents said promises made by the government during visits to flood-stricken areas earlier in 2026 have not been fulfilled.

Bridges in Gumela village, south of Musina, remain damaged, leaving villagers cut off and making it difficult to reach healthcare or emergency services.

One community member said they feel “alone and unprotected”, calling for urgent action to restore safety, water and electricity supply.

“We are struggling to cross the rivers to where we live. So, we're from the clinic now. But, eish, for us to get here, yeah, it was so difficult because the rivers are overflowing.”

With rivers still swelling and roads impassable, residents are urged to take care, avoid risky crossings, and report any emergencies to the provincial disaster management centre.

ROAD CLOSURES

Road closures have been implemented in parts of Limpopo following flood damage to critical infrastructure.

The provincial Department of Transport said a bridge on the R524 near Matiyani, in the Vhembe district, has been damaged, forcing authorities to close the road approximately eight kilometres from the Kruger National Park gate.

Motorists are advised to use alternative routes while officials assess the extent of the damage.

In the Mopani district, the D447 route between Modjadjiskloof and Mooketsi has also been closed due to flooding.

Motorists are being rerouted via the R36 towards Politsi.

“Relevant authorities are assessing the damage and will provide updates. Motorists are advised to drive with caution, especially in wet weather conditions,” said departmental spokesperson Mashudu Mabata.
