History met emotion at Steyn City on Thursday as LIV Golf Johannesburg 2026 opened its doors to Africa for the very first time.

Rising to the occasion, South Africa’s own Southern Guards GC surged to the top of the team leaderboard.

Backed by a vibrant home crowd, the all-South African quartet finished the opening round at an impressive 18-under-par. This early charge placed them one shot clear of Smash GC, with Crushers GC trailing closely behind.

At the heart of the performance was Branden Grace, who produced a composed seven-under 64 to set the tone. His round, defined by control and consistency, provided the platform for a team effort that blended resilience with momentum.

Grace’s teammates ensured the push continued. Dean Burmester added a solid four-under 67, while captain Louis Oosthuizen contributed a steady two-under 69. Perhaps the most remarkable performance came from Charl Schwartzel, who battled through visible discomfort to post a five-under 66.

Schwartzel’s round carried a deeper narrative. Less than 24 hours before tee-off, there were serious doubts about whether he would even take part due to a troubling back injury. After early morning treatment and a race against time to be fit, he stepped onto the first tee and delivered.

The response from the crowd added to the occasion. Roars followed birdies and applause echoed across the course in a way rarely associated with traditional golf events. For the players, it felt like a moment of national significance.

Burmester, clearly moved by the atmosphere, described it as one of the most meaningful days of his career, while Oosthuizen admitted the reception on the opening tee left him momentarily speechless.

While the home team dominated the team standings, the individual leaderboard told a slightly different story. Charles Howell III and Bryson DeChambeau, both representing Crushers GC, surged to the top at eight-under-par after matching rounds of 63.

Howell’s performance was particularly clinical, navigating the course without a single dropped shot, while DeChambeau’s round showcased both power and control, continuing the form that saw him arrive in Johannesburg off the back of a victory in Singapore. Not far behind, Grace’s 64 placed him firmly in contention alongside Sergio García, who also impressed with a bogey-free round.

Meanwhile, Jon Rahm quietly positioned himself within striking distance after a six-under 65, underlining the depth of competition in the field.

Steyn City proved to be both playable and entertaining on day one, with the course yielding low scores across the board. The average score dipped well below par, with the majority of holes offering birdie opportunities.

Beyond the numbers, it was the energy that stood out. With tens of thousands of fans already through the gates, the event delivered an atmosphere that felt closer to a sporting festival than a traditional golf tournament.

From packed fairways to animated greens, the crowd played its part, lifting the home players and adding a unique edge to the competition. For South Africa, this opening round was about more than just leaderboard positions.

It was a showcase of the country’s ability to host world-class sport and a reminder of the talent it continues to produce.

With three rounds still to play, the Southern Guards GC have given themselves the perfect platform. But with international stars in pursuit and conditions still evolving, the battle is far from over. What is certain, however, is that LIV Golf’s arrival in South Africa has already delivered something memorable,a powerful mix of elite competition, home pride, and a crowd fully invested in every shot.
