Four suspected criminals have been killed in a shootout with police in Bellair, south of Durban, on Monday evening.
Police said the group, which was sought for various crimes was pounced on at a hair salon believed to have been their longtime hideout.
"When police tried to stop them, the suspects fled and they came to this house behind me, which is their hideout spot. That’s where, during the operation, there was a shootout and four of them were shot and fatally wounded. Two were shot inside the house, one behind the house and the other in the bush behind the houses," said KZN police spokesperson, Robert Netshiunda.
He said police have been on a hunt for the group for a while.
"They were committed over several months, now that’s why police were checking them and they are also believed to be involved in some cases of kidnapping in the area and together with areas of Marrianhill and surrounding areas."
