The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (GOGTA) in the Eastern Cape has rejected the alleged inauguration of a Nigerian King in KuGompo City, formally known as East London.

Reports indicate that an individual identified as Chief Solomon Ogbonna Eziko was allegedly coronated by a group of community members originating from Nigeria.

Dr Jongi Klaas, a cultural expert and senior researcher at COGTA Eastern Cape, explained that allowing the coronation of a king without the community's express permission is considered an anomaly and a sign of disrespect.

He emphasised that this is not just about a cultural group, but about the respect and dignity of the African traditional leadership.

"If you have a house, someone else stands up in the morning in front of your house to say I'm the head of this household. What would be your reaction?

“Even in Nigeria, you hear about things like this happening. Hence, everyone was shocked to learn about it.”

COGTA has engaged the Department of International Relations and Cooperation to facilitate diplomatic engagement with the relevant authorities, including the High Commission of Nigeria, to address this matter.

Klaas noted that the matter is not necessarily about Nigeria but rather finding a balance between welcoming foreigners and protecting the rights and interests of local communities.
