A leaked Democratic Alliance (DA) report has uncovered that the party is coughing up more than R60,000 per month for its mayoral candidate in Tshwane, Cilliers Brink, to remain in the city.
A confidential document signed by the party’s former federal finance chairperson, Dion George, listed the names of party leaders receiving special salary top-ups.
Among them are outgoing leader John Steenhuisen and Deputy Finance Minister Ashor Sarupen.
Brink was earning a monthly salary of more than R100,000 until his removal as Tshwane mayor in September 2024.
After the motion of no confidence that saw him lose his job, the leaked document suggests he wanted to return to Parliament.
However, the party convinced him to remain as an ordinary Tshwane councillor at least until the upcoming local government elections.
The party views Tshwane as a strategic metro, where it could significantly grow its electoral support with Brink at the helm.
The leaked report further reveals the party’s federal finance committee approved a monthly payment of R62,000 for Brink to stay in the city.
This amount is in addition to what he already earns as an ordinary councillor.
