Attendees at the first instalment of Main Street Sundays in Johannesburg have shared their excitement as a hive of activity transforms an otherwise ordinary CBD roadway.

The event has turned a section of the usually busy Main Street in Marshalltown into a pedestrian-only zone, fostering community, creativity and connection.

As visitors move through the street, traffic is replaced by walking, cycling, art displays and local food vendors.

According to organisers, the aim is to deliver a world-class urban experience inspired by cities such as Bogotá and Cape Town.

Young people participating in the initiative by Jozi My Jozi, in collaboration with Young Urbanists, said the event has lived up to expectations.

“What was really heartwarming was seeing local entrepreneurs, denim makers, soup makers, bag makers, local sunglass brands and them being able to showcase their art, their products. That was very cool to see,” said one person.

“Today we are here at Jozi My Jozi on Main Street in the CBD. We are here on a social ride with different groups, Banditz Bicycle Club as well. It’s cool vibes, cool people - it’s art, culture, creativity, you know the vibes,” said another.

The entire Main Street has been closed off to traffic to allow local businesses and activations to take place.

Activities include book clubs, yoga, skateboarding and cycling, as well as food, craft, clothing and bag vendors, with every corner of the street activated.

“I came as one of the people who cycled from Joburg to Main Street. This has been such an exceptional day, it’s an exceptional event. There’s lots of art, sculptures, clothes, food. It’s such an awesome experience.”

Patrons said the initiative has helped to positively redefine the experience of the city centre.
