One of newly elected Democratic Alliance (DA) federal leader Geordin Hill-Lewis’ biggest priorities in the position is to make the party the biggest in the country.
Hill-Lewis, who’s also the Mayor of Cape Town, was elected to the position at the party’s federal congress in Midrand on Sunday.
He comes at a crucial time in South Africa’s democracy, as the most contested municipal elections are just around the corner.
Delivering his victory speech, Hill-Lewis said he’s up for the challenge.
“That is the mission that you’ve given me today [Sunday], to grow the DA into the largest party in South Africa and to lead a new national government. Everything I do as your leader and everything we do together, will be to complete that mission.”
He said his ambitions of overtaking the African National Congress (ANC) are realistic.
“To win, we must do four things. The first is this: we must continue to show that the DA governs well for everyone. The second thing we must do to win: We must connect more deeply with the millions of South Africans who have never voted for us before.
“The third thing we must do to win: be a strong and principled partner in national government. The fourth thing we must do to win: lead with belief in South Africa.”
